The annual Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville — billed as “the most exciting two minutes in sports” — is a massive, drunken adult prom with 19th-century aristocratic colonial pretensions, but also a very advanced, looped-out fashion event that has been flowering in on itself in an exclusive, unchecked, self-referential way for generations.
