It seems smartphones are making point-and-shoot cameras obsolete, but companies like Nikon and Canon are coming out with some of their best cameras yet. Some of our favorites:
Device: Canon PowerShot S110Why It’s Awesome: Canon’s storied PowerShot line was upgraded just this month with the release of the new, top-of-the-line PowerShot S110. It’s small, svelte, and powerful, sporting 12.1MP, 1/1/7-inch sensor, 5x zoom, and HD video recording. It even boasts its own 3-inch capacitive touchscreen to handle all the menu functionality. Not bad for $449.Where to Buy: Canon
Device: Sony RX100Why It’s Awesome: The RX100 is truly the cream of the crop. You’d never know it to look at it, but it’s one-inch, 20MP (read: massive) sensor and 28-100mm equivalent Carl Zeiss lens puts it in DSLR territory. It’s slick yet unassuming package is perfect for professionals and hobbyists alike, though, at $650, it’s a little pricey for puppy pictures.Where to Buy: Sony
Device: Nikon Coolpix S800cWhy It’s Awesome: One wonders if Ashton had anything to do with this. The Coolpix S800c, while not the first full-fledged point-and-shoot to run Android, is the first to hit the market. Running on top of its 16MP CMOS sensor and 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen is Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Available for $350.Where to Buy: Nikon
Device: Samsung Galaxy CameraWhy It’s Awesome: Now for the dream machines. Samsung announced its Galaxy Camera not long after the Coolpix S800c. Far from being the red-headed stepchild of the premier Galaxy family, this device runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and touts a 16MP sensor and 21x zoom. Impressive. Expect some amazing Instagram pics from this camera when it sees release.Where to Buy: Samsung
