North Americans are so fat, the continent has more than one-third of the world’s body weight — despite being home to less than 10 percent of the planet’s people. While Americans are the world’s heaviest people, the lightest live in Bangladesh. To weigh in at one ton, 12 average Americans would need to stand together on a scale, the study shows. It would take 20.2 average Bangladeshis huddling together to reach the same weight. If everybody in the world came to weigh as much as the average soda-sipping, burger-gobbling American, the world’s farmers and other food producers would need to ramp up production 20 percent to feed the equivalent of 935 million more people, the researchers calculated.
