San Nicolas Island, about 65 miles off the Southern California coast, was once covered with hundreds of feral cats — until the U.S. Navy swooped in (with $3 million and 18 months of work) and declared victory.

The island was officially declared cat-free last week, the completion of the fifth-largest such project in the world and the largest that didn’t use poison.
“The cats were all over the island,” Jen Boyce, a program manager for the Montrose Settlement Restoration Program, which funded the cat hunt, told The Daily. “This is really difficult terrain, and trying to capture these cats without poison was tough.”
